Swimwear chosen by cut, not by luck

RELLECIGA makes one thing and makes a lot of it: 584 swimsuits, from a string triangle to an underwire one piece. Every piece here says what it covers and what it holds, so you can decide before it arrives rather than after.

A swimsuit is worn for eight hours and swum in for twenty minutes. We cut for the eight.

The RELLECIGA approach

Our story

How RELLECIGA works, and why it only makes swimwear

RELLECIGA is a Paris atelier that makes swimwear and nothing else. That sounds like a limitation and it is the opposite: a house that also makes dresses treats a swimsuit as one product among forty, and a swimsuit is the hardest garment in a wardrobe to get right.

It has to hold a body in motion, survive salt and chlorine, dry on a balcony and still look like something on the second day of a holiday. Nothing else in a suitcase is asked to do all four.

The string triangle, the cut the atelier keeps coming back to.

We start at the pattern, not the print

A print sells a swimsuit in a photograph. The pattern decides whether it is worn twice or thirty times. So the order of work here runs cut first, fit second, colour last. That order is what brings the same shape back season after season in a new colourway rather than replacing it with a new shape every spring.

It also explains the shape of the range below. A department is not a season or a mood, it is a cut: sets, bottoms, tops, one pieces, tankinis and the layers that go over them.

What we make and what we do not claim

We design swimwear and we sell it. We do not weave the fabric, we do not run a dye house, and we will not tell you our looms run through the night. What the atelier can tell you is how a piece is cut, what it covers, how much it holds and where it is going to disappoint you.

That last part matters more in swimwear than anywhere else, because the failure modes are specific and nobody prints them. A bandeau does not stay up in surf. A string triangle carries almost no weight. A pale swimsuit goes translucent when it is wet. Saying so costs a sale now and again and saves a return every time.

Colour is the second decision, and it is a real one

Ask somebody what they are looking for in swimwear and the answer is rarely a silhouette. It is black, or that green, or leopard. So the range repeats a shade across cuts on purpose, and the colour map further down this page is the fastest way through it.

Shades run in batches, which means two pieces bought months apart will be close rather than identical. That is how dyeing works, and we would rather write it here than have you find it out holding a top against a bottom.

Price, and what it actually buys

Most of the range sits between fifteen and forty dollars. At that end a piece is one fabric, a clean seam and a light lining, and it will do a season of real wear. Higher up there is structure: moulded cups, boning, hand-set trim, and the pieces at the top of the range are made in numbers small enough that they go and do not come back.

Neither end is a trick. What the atelier will not do is dress the cheap end up as the expensive one. So the cut goes on the card, and the comparison table further down says out loud which cut holds and which one only looks like it does.

Under thirty

What thirty dollars buys in this range

The lower end of swimwear is where the fabric goes thin and the seams go first. These four are the ones we would put our name on at this price.

What we look at

The four checks a RELLECIGA piece goes through

Swimwear earns its reputation in the water and loses it in a changing room. These are the four places the atelier looks before a cut joins the range.

1Wet opacity

Every pale fabric goes under water before it goes into the range. A white swimsuit that turns translucent when wet is not a colourway, it is a fault, and it goes back to a heavier knit or a full lining.

2The stretch-and-return

Fabric is pulled to the limit of the size run and released. What matters is whether it comes back. Swim fabric that stays stretched has lost its elastane and will bag at the seat after four wears.

3Strap load

Halter and triangle ties are loaded at the neck and shoulder, because that is where a bikini top fails first. Skipped stitches and a stretched tie both show up under load and neither shows up on a hanger.

4The sit-and-stand

Somebody puts it on, sits for twenty minutes and stands up. Ride-up at the seat, gaping at the bust and a waistband that rolls are all things you find this way and no other.

None of this is a laboratory programme and the atelier does not dress it up as one. It is the ordinary care of people who have to look at a sample and say it is good enough to put a name on.

Honest comparison

Every cut in the range, and what each one actually does

Six cuts do almost all the work in swimwear. Each is good at something and bad at something else, and the bad half is the half nobody prints.

There is no best column. A string triangle and an underwire set are two answers to two different days, and a range this size exists so one cut does not have to do both jobs.

The question nobody answers

What the range actually carries in your size

A brand can list five sizes and stock two of them. This is a straight count of what exists right now, department by department.

Counted from pieces with a current price. Where a maker publishes a US equivalent for a letter size we print it on the card. Where nobody publishes one we print nothing rather than a guess.

Keeping it

Five habits that double the life of a swimsuit

Swimwear does not die of age, it dies of chlorine, sun cream and heat. None of the five below costs anything.

  1. Rinse in cold water the moment you are out, before the chlorine or salt dries into the fabric. This one habit outperforms every other on the list.
  2. Never wring it. Twisting breaks the elastane, which is what holds the shape, and the damage does not come back.
  3. Dry flat in shade. Hanging a wet swimsuit stretches it under its own weight, and direct sun fades a dyed fabric faster than the water does.
  4. Keep sun cream and swimsuit apart where you can. Oils and chemical filters mark pale fabric permanently, and white and nude show it first.
  5. Rotate two suits rather than wearing one twice a day. Elastane needs a day to recover, and a suit that never gets one loses its shape in a fortnight.

Before you decide

Questions we get every week

How do RELLECIGA sizes run?

Close to standard US sizing, and each piece carries the size the maker publishes for it. Swim fabric stretches, so between sizes the usual answer is to keep your size rather than go up. Where a piece runs small its description says so.

Which cut holds a larger bust?

Underwire first, then halter, then a triangle with wide ties. A bandeau holds least of anything here and is a sunbathing top rather than a swimming one. The comparison table on this page sets the six cuts side by side.

Will a pale swimsuit go see-through when wet?

A thin one will, and that is true of every brand. Pale pieces here are checked wet before they join the range, and the ones with a full lining say so in their descriptions.

Can I buy a top and a bottom in different sizes?

Yes, and for a lot of people that is the only way a swimsuit fits properly. Swim Tops and Swim Bottoms are separate departments for exactly this reason.

How do I know a piece is still available?

Everything shown here had a current price when the page was last updated. A piece with no current price gets no page at all, so a short department is an honest one rather than a careless one.
